Welcome to the fourth step in our chakra journey! Having explored the grounding Root Chakra, the flowing Sacral Chakra, and the fiery Solar Plexus Chakra, we now arrive at the centre of our being – the Heart Chakra. As your guide at Circle Yoga, I'm delighted to share how this beautiful energy centre can transform your capacity for love, compassion, and connection.
The Heart Chakra, known in Sanskrit as "Anahata" (meaning "unhurt" or "unstruck"), is your centre of love, compassion, and connection. Located in the middle of your chest, this radiant green energy centre is associated with the element of air – expansive, boundless, and ever-present.
Anahata serves as the bridge between the lower chakras (concerned with physical matters) and the upper chakras (focused on spiritual awareness). When this chakra flows freely, you experience life with an open heart, balancing self-love with compassion for others.
When your Heart Chakra is harmoniously balanced, you'll likely experience:
Deep self-love and acceptance
Genuine compassion and empathy for others
The ability to maintain healthy boundaries while staying open
Ease in giving and receiving love
A sense of peace and harmony in relationships
Forgiveness and understanding, even in challenging situations
Like air that becomes stagnant or turbulent, the Heart Chakra can become closed or overly expansive. In my yoga practice, I've observed these common signs of Anahata disruption:
Difficulty giving or receiving love
Fear of intimacy or emotional vulnerability
Persistent grief, loneliness, or feelings of isolation
Holding onto past hurts or resentment
Codependency or poor boundaries in relationships
Physical tension in the chest, shoulders, or upper back
My yoga practice incorporates specific poses and techniques designed to open and balance Anahata energy. These heart-opening movements create space for love and healing to flow freely throughout your mind, body, and spirit.
Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana) - Gently opens the chest and stimulates the heart centre
Camel Pose (Ustrasana) - Creates a powerful heart expansion and emotional release
Bridge Pose (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana) - Lifts the heart while providing gentle support
Cow Face Pose (Gomukhasana) - Opens the shoulders and chest to release emotional tension
Fish Pose (Matsyasana) - Creates a deep heart opening while supported by the earth
Practice "Anahata Breath" by placing your hands on your heart centre and breathing deeply into this space. As you inhale, visualise a soft green light expanding through your chest. As you exhale, imagine sending this loving energy outward to others. This gentle technique nurtures self-love while fostering connection with those around you.
Cultivate your Heart Chakra energy throughout the day with these simple yet effective practices:
The heart resonates deeply with the natural world. Spend time among trees and plants, particularly those with green foliage. Forest bathing (simply being present among trees) can have a profound balancing effect on the Heart Chakra.
Incorporate green foods like leafy vegetables, avocados, green apples, kiwis, and green herbs into your diet. These foods vibrate with the green energy of the Heart Chakra, supporting its natural balance.
Take time for activities that bring you joy and nourishment. Whether it's a warm bath, reading poetry, or simply sitting in quiet reflection, self-care is a direct expression of self-love.
Repeat these powerful affirmations during meditation or throughout your day:
"I am open to giving and receiving love"
"I am worthy of love and compassion"
"I forgive myself and others with compassion"
"My heart is open to life's possibilities"
By nurturing your Heart Chakra, you cultivate the capacity for deeper connection—both with yourself and with others. This beautiful energy centre reminds us that true strength comes not from closing ourselves off, but from having the courage to remain open, even when it feels vulnerable.
In my yoga practice, I guide students through gentle sequences that create space for emotional release and heart opening. These practices help dissolve the protective barriers we build around our hearts, allowing love and compassion to flow naturally.

Remember, as I often share in my teachings: "An open heart may feel vulnerable, but it is the only way to truly experience the richness of life."
With open-hearted love and peace,
Elizabeth
