Welcome to the fifth step in our chakra journey! After exploring the grounding Root Chakra, the flowing Sacral Chakra, the empowered Solar Plexus, and the open-hearted Anahata, we now arrive at the centre of self-expression—the Throat Chakra. As your guide at Circle Yoga, I’m delighted to share how this energy centre helps you communicate with clarity, listen with presence, and express your authentic self with confidence.
The Throat Chakra, or Vishuddha in Sanskrit (meaning “pure” or “purification”), is the fifth chakra, located at the centre of the throat. Associated with the element of sound and the colour blue, this energy centre governs your ability to speak your truth, express your creativity, and listen deeply—to yourself and to others.
Vishuddha serves as a vital bridge between the emotional heart and the intuitive mind, allowing your inner wisdom to be expressed outwardly with honesty and ease.
When the Throat Chakra is in harmony, you may experience:
Confidence in speaking your truth
Clear and authentic communication
A strong connection to creative self-expression
Ease in both speaking and listening
Alignment between your thoughts, feelings, and words
Just as sound can be muffled or distorted, the energy of the Throat Chakra can become blocked or overactive. Common signs of imbalance include:
Struggling to express your thoughts or emotions
Fear of judgement, criticism, or “saying the wrong thing”
Tension in the neck, shoulders, or jaw
Frequent sore throats or hoarseness
Talking excessively, interrupting, or difficulty listening
Feeling creatively stuck or misunderstood
In this week’s practice, we focus on gentle, mindful movement and breathwork to release tension and stimulate energy flow through the throat, jaw, and upper spine. These poses are accessible for all levels and invite a deep connection to your inner voice.
Throat-Opening Yoga Poses
Fish Pose (Matsyasana) – Opens the throat and heart, encouraging emotional and energetic release
Shoulder Stand (Sarvangasana) – Stimulates the thyroid and promotes energetic clarity
Neck Rolls and Gentle Stretches – Relieve tension in the throat and jaw
Cat-Cow Pose (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana) – Links breath with movement to awaken the voice and spine
As you move through your practice, breathe consciously and allow each inhale and exhale to create spaciousness through the throat. Let your breath become your first expression of truth.
True expression extends into every part of your life. Here are a few simple ways to nurture your throat chakra beyond your yoga practice:
Engage in Creative Expression
Sing, write, read poetry aloud, chant, or have an honest conversation with someone you trust. Any form of authentic expression helps your voice find its natural rhythm.
Surround Yourself with Blue
Wear blue clothing, decorate with calming blue tones, or sip on blue herbal teas like butterfly pea flower. Eating blue and purple foods such as blueberries, blackberries, and red cabbage also supports throat chakra energy.
Honour the Power of Silence
Balance your outward expression with intentional stillness. Moments of silence help reconnect you to your inner truth and cultivate deeper presence.
Affirmations are a powerful way to reprogramme limiting beliefs and awaken inner confidence. Here are a few to try during meditation or throughout your day:
“I express my truth with clarity and grace.”
“My voice matters.”
“I communicate with honesty and compassion.”
“I listen with an open heart and mind.”
When your Throat Chakra is balanced, you speak with integrity, listen with presence, and express your creativity without fear. It’s not about being loud—it’s about being true.
At Circle Yoga, I guide students through practices that gently reconnect them with their voice, breath, and inner wisdom. Whether you’re just beginning or continuing your chakra journey, I invite you to explore this space of self-expression with compassion and curiosity.
Stay connected for upcoming practices, chakra workshops, and community offerings to support your inner alignment.
With truth, clarity, and love,
